Clyde Thompson - Woman in a Dream III

1700 S College Ave, Tempe

Clyde Thompson, a former graffiti artist and Arizona State University graduate, is one of the current hot muralists in the Valley.  His distinctive work can be seen throughout the Phoenix area, including this beautiful piece in his hometown, Tempe.  Located on the north end of the Montage Apartments, this mural is just across the street from Daley Park, where you will find other wonderful examples of public art.

Woman in a Dream III (the first two versions of Woman in a Dream were temporary street installations) has both a subconscious, dreamy feel, as well as seeming retro at the same time.  The colors and the square shapes of the buildings in the mural are contrasted with the curvy, liquid setting that harkens back to the black and white psychological thrillers of the 1950s.  The woman in the mural seems confused and out of control, all emotions we feel in certain dreams.  Is she being followed?  Has she just heard a noise?  Does she live in these apartments or is she traveling to them?  Is her connection to the buildings positive?  Thompson has been able to put all of this into what is basically a picture with border objects on either side, but it works to draw us into the story of the piece.  Story and symbolism aside, this aesthetically pleasing mural is a great fit for its environment.

You will be able to find ample parking at Daley Park, as well as lots of activities for young ones, including a playground and plenty of open space.  Woman in a Dream III is large enough and unobstructed enough that a walk from Daley Park to the mural will give you a variety of views of the piece, an effort the details and colors of Woman in a Dream III will greatly reward.
