Gary Slater - Right Angle Variations

7343 E Scottsdale Mall, Scottsdale

Local artist Gary Slater has produced another wonderful piece for the Valley in Right Angle Variations, situated in the gorgeous Scottsdale Civic Center Mall.  Surrounded by grass and trees, Right Angle Variations seems to fit right into the landscape of the park atmosphere.  Using six right angles, varied slightly to form a sense of interlocking pieces, Slater has created a sculpture that is appealing to the eye, but also engages the mind as the viewer tries to figure out what angles belong to which ends.  The sculpture is made out of burnished stainless steel which reflects light in unpredictable ways, adding to a sense of movement in the entangled shapes.  Overall, an excellent example of geometric abstract art coming to life and pulling the viewer into the movement that this inanimate object seems to possess.

The Civic Center Mall is a perfect place for children to visit, with plenty of grass to run on as well as beautiful gardens and water features to admire.  The Civic Center Mall is also the home to the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, which always has exhibits that will stretch your view of what really constitutes art, providing provocative and innovative shows in their four gallery spaces, as well as a sculpture courtyard.
