Jasper D’Ambrosi - The Fallen Warrior
1700 W Washington St, Phoenix (Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza)
Part of the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial at Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza, this moving sculpture, by Jasper D’Ambrosi, sets the mood for remembering those that have fought for our freedoms throughout our history. Entitled The Fallen Warrior, this bronze depicts two soldiers tirelessly trying to help a wounded brother. The outcome is uncertain, but the effort is heroic. Besides the sculpture, the memorial includes ten granite columns inscribed with the names of Arizonans killed or missing in action in Vietnam. There is also a timeline that provides a history of the war. Not only is this sculpture both somber and moving, it offers a great opportunity to teach children about the costs paid for the freedoms we enjoy in the United States of America.
D’Ambrosi worked on many monuments throughout the country. He died in 1986 from health issues that are suspected to have been caused by years of working with toxic materials in his art.
Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza, located in front of the Arizona State Capitol, has over forty monuments and memorials. The Capitol and the Arizona Capitol Museum are also well worth your time. There is visitor parking available on the north and south sides of the Plaza.
