Emry Kopta - Kachina Fountain

400 E Tyler Mall, Tempe (ASU)

Tied in with Emry Kopta’s lovely Hopi Flute Player (which you can read about at Greater Phoenix Public Art), is his beautiful Kachina Fountain (also known as Fountain in Cast Stone) in front of the stately Old Main on the Arizona State University campus.  In this park-like setting, with a background of the aged bricks of Old Main, the Kachina Fountain fits perfectly, providing an inviting aquatic welcome to the campus in the middle of the desert.  The lawn and foliage are a great color contrast to the red of the building and the blue of the fountain interior.  A place to relax and think about days of old.

The center of the stone fountain is decorated with four kachinas, which are givers of well being in the Hopi tradition.  Kopta had a special relationship with the Hopi tribe and this influence is clear in his artwork.  This combination of a traditional European fountain and Native American traditions reflects the many cultures that make up the Valley of the Sun.  It is a testament to this blending of cultures that Kachina Fountain has welcomed visitors to the ASU campus since the 1930’s.

Kachina Fountain is located just south of E University Ave. and to the east of S College Ave.  Be sure to pay attention to the parking requirements at ASU, or avoid all potential parking headaches by using light rail instead.
