Simone Avery Woodard - Art Bench (Frolic Under the Gilbert Sky)
388 N Gilbert Rd, Gilbert
After a rocky start getting the project under way, the town of Gilbert now has four delightful benches in their downtown area. This bench, by Simone Avery Woodard, includes many Southwestern creatures set in a more wooded area than we are used to. There is a large tree with a swing attached to it, and a house that appears to be a treehouse, though it is all a bit fanciful. On the east side of the bench you will find what looks like a coyote who is reading a book. Very fun. The back of the bench has a Vincent Van Gogh - Starry Night feel.
There is a sign next to the bench that seems to indicate that the title is Frolic Under the Gilbert Sky, but it is unclear if this is the title for this bench only, or if that is the title for the entire bench project. Either way, this piece is fun to look at and to sit on. It is made out of fiberglass and is meant to glow at night through a creative lighting design. Hats off to Gilbert for providing beauty and function with the bench project.
Woodard was trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, but currently lives in Arizona. You can see some of her other art, including her intriguing fiber art coil baskets, at Art By Simone.
