Ed Mell - Jack Knife
7077 E Main St, Scottsdale
A true Arizona treasure, Ed Mell grew up in Phoenix, attended Phoenix College, and found his way to New York City where he worked in advertising. Thankfully, he heard his true calling as a painter and sculptor and returned back to the Valley, where he is still active.
Known for his sharp angles, desert themes, and for capturing powerful moments, Mell has built an international following. As you become familiar with his style you will be able to recognize a piece of his with only a quick glance, and if you are like me, it will draw you in for a closer look.
This monument-size bronze of Jack Knife is a perfect example. We see the rider just as the bronco is at the peak of his jump. The rider appears calm, but you can feel the pull in his arm and the pressure of his legs against the horse’s body. It is beautiful and terrifying at the same time. This commissioned work is based on the official city seal of Scottsdale.
Jack Knife is located in the Scottsdale Arts District, so set aside some extra time to check out the wonderful galleries that Scottsdale has to offer. If you are interested in owning an Ed Mell piece of your own, you can contact him through his Ed Mell Gallery site.
Below is another example of Ed Mell’s work. It is a lithograph entitled Golden Light - Lake Powell, in the collection of the Phoenix Public Library. Notice the severe angles and the power of the storm clouds. Do seek out Mell’s work wherever you can. You will not be disappointed.
