Nnamdi Okonkwo - They Are Waiting

228 W Main St, Mesa

Okonkow, a six-foot, nine- inch tall Nigerian born artist, produces female themed work in the same genre of this bronze piece, The Are Waiting.  There is something very melancholy about this work, showing three women who look bored or disappointed, but presenting them in an exaggerated, almost comic book style.  Some of Okonkow’s work is full of optimism with dancing and hugging, apparently made to bring an unbridled response of joy.  When smiling at They Are Waiting, there is a twinge of guilt as the ladies do not seem as happy as the piece can make the viewer.

Children will love both the playfulness and large size of this sculpture.  The Downtown Mesa Art Walk has about 30  sculptures and 20 murals to view, so give yourself plenty of time to experience this treasure chest of public art.

Below is an oil pastel by Okonkow, titled Celebration, which was on view at Celebration of Fine Arts a few years back.
