Rania Ayyoub - Resist

710 N 9th St, Phoenix

On September 18, 2020, we lost the nation’s second female Supreme Court justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, after seventeen years of service to our country.  Her legacy revolves around championing gender and minority rights.  She was also a role model for many women coming of age during the time of Ginsburg’s service from 1993-2020.

To honor Ginsburg’s passing and her contributions as a female trailblazer, local artist Rania Ayyoub painted her first mural, Resist.  The piece includes an image of Ginsburg, based on the popular Notorious R.B.G image, that includes Ginsburg wearing a crown, looking straight out at the viewer, and, of course, wearing one of her famous lace collars, known as a jabot.  The mural also includes a desert landscape that feels like something from another planet, a collection of bull skulls, and a large helping of floating eyes, a go-to for Ayyoub in many of her paintings.  The combination is very impactful, but the image of Ginsburg is what will draw the viewer in.  Next to Ginsburg’s likeness is the word Resist.  This goes back to Ginsburg’s many dissenting votes on the Supreme Court which gave her a reputation for speaking her mind and making sure she was heard.

Ayyoub has chosen a black background for the mural, which helps bring out the color that is included in the piece, some of which was applied directly with her hand instead of a brush.

The corner of 9th and Pierce is a quiet spot with available parking.  The sidewalk provides plenty of viewing space of the mural.  This piece can provide a time of reflection, thankfulness, and certainly the chance to get educated.
