Robert Indiana - LOVE
3839 N Drinkwater Blvd, Scottsdale
Part of the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall, you will find Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture near the Civic Center Library (which includes The Gallery @ The Library) and City Hall. A popular backdrop for engagement/wedding pictures in the Valley, this is also the type of piece that children will enjoy. The Mall is beautifully landscaped with grass and fountains, as well as restaurants, galleries, the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
Born Robert Clark, Indiana changed his name to that of his home state, Indiana. He was a versatile artist, working as a sculptor, painter and printer, but he will always be known for his LOVE design. The iconic image was created for New York’s Museum of Modern Art's 1965 Christmas card. In 1970, Indiana created his first steele LOVE sculpture, on display at Newfields in Indianapolis. The design has been duplicated all over the world and even appeared on a postage stamp in 1973. This aluminum version, which weighs 3,800 pounds, was installed in 2002.
As an example of some other work by Indiana, here is a 1974/75 screen print of his, titled Liberty ‘76, owned by The San Diego Museum of Art.
